Doreen, I think it's a raccoon. Nothing too scary about it, although they can get pretty big. I can't wait to find more wild footprints around here!

GingerV, I think it was some kind of silt/sludge/mud. It looks like it's hard, dry, and cracked, but Hubby started to ride over it on his bike and just sunk down a good few inches.
