Empty Feeder

I filled the hummingbird feeder yesterday. I mean, really filled it. And granted, this time of year, we have gobs of hummers. But not enough to empty that sucker!

It can only mean one thing! Yep. The bats are back!!! I also know this because there are telltale red splotches on the patio deck, I assume from the red food coloring of many hummingbird feeders that these bats have visited all night long. I don't use the store bought food, just sugar and water.

A couple of years ago, we sat out on the deck around 9 p.m. and let the swarm of bats circle around our heads. No, it wasn't gross. It wasn't scary. Actually, it was very cool.

I mentioned to Hubby this afternoon that we need to read up on the night shot on the camera that we make commercials with. How cool would that be??? Please stand by, you may just get to see our bats!

Oh, I would so love to see them. When I lived at the Grand Canyon we used to take a bright flashlight and basically blind them with it and they would fly where you would shine the light. It was like you were controlling their flight. Very cool I thought. Just don't fly them into anything so they don't get hurt.

Learned something new today - did not know bats would go for hummingbird feeders. I'll have to keep an eye on ours out of curiosity.

Oh those furry stinkers. It depends on what the bats are up to, whether they freak me out or not. We had three find their way in our house one summer (not all at once) - that freaked me out. Once, I lived in an old farm house that one side was being renovated into an apartment. Bats were living in that side of the house. There was a door in our bedroom that led you into the other side and our bed was in front of that door. I tried to fall asleep one night and heard the most AWFUL screeching and crying noise, like from over my head. Yeah....that's when I started sleeping with Sammy (three at the time) at the other end of the house. Ray didn't care, he was too tired from farming to even notice me gone back then.

So...we love bats, now, outside...not in the house.

I was afraid you were going to tell us that the bats ate the hummingbirds....then, I would have freaked.

Interesting about bats and hummingbird feeders. It would be cool to capture those bats in a photo.

Hi

I never knew bats ate hummingbird food. We have a flock of bats that have just started visiting the last few weeks. I do not mind them, anything to eat the biting bugs is fine with me.

Take care:)

I LOVE bats! Always have! I remember as a kid going to some caves in Oregon that had bats, and I wanted to take them home with me. In a paper bag. My Mother vetoed me. Sigh.

I love watching bats zig zag over the twilight sky.

I love bats too. When I stay in France we get them behind the shutters. I blogged with photos at
Bats Behind The Shutters.
